1. Engine Application
The RFE4E0001 is designed for the Detroit Diesel Series 60 (12.7L and 14L).
2. Critical Compatibility: Series 60 "DDEC" Versions
While the Series 60 is a 14L engine (specifically the 14.0L variant introduced in the late 1990s), you cannot simply install this injector into any Series 60. You must identify your engine’s Model Year and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) status:
Compatible: Engines with DDEC IV (Detroit Diesel Electronic Control version 4) and DDEC V (pre-EGR) configurations.
Compatible: Engines with EGR (2002–2007) if this specific injector is listed for your EGR engine build. Many aftermarket cross-references list RFE4E0001 for "Series 60 2000-2007."
NOT Compatible: DDEC II or DDEC III engines (generally pre-1998). These use different injector tips, hold-down clamps, and electronic actuation.
3. The "14L" Distinction
The Detroit Diesel Series 60 came in 12.7L and 14.0L displacements.
Injectors are not differentiated by displacement (12.7L vs 14.0L) but by the engine serial number.
The critical split: In the mid-2000s, Detroit Diesel changed the injector spray pattern, tip protrusion, and fire deck design.
If your 14L engine has a "high compression" fire deck or is a "Blue" (2004+) engine, using the wrong injector (like an RFE4E0001 meant for earlier models) will result in the injector tip hitting the piston, destroying the engine.
